Creed and Ice Cube were the big winners at the inaugural All Def Movie Awards, held in Los Angeles on Wednesday night with Creed winning Best Actor and Best Director for the work of Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Cooglar respectively. Straight Outta Compton beat competition from Beasts of No Nation, Chi-raq, Concussion, Creed and Dope to win Best Picture; Ice Cube was there with his son and star of Straight Outta Compton, O’Shea Jackson Jr. to accept the award.
The awards were staged by hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons after he bemoaned the lack of diversity at this year’s Academy Awards. Simmons said at the time of the announcement, “I’m more concerned that in 2016 there continues to be a stunning lack of diversity in the studios, in the green light process, in the decisions of what films and television series get made, and what actors get chosen. This needs to be addressed institutionally.” The announcement to stage the All Def Movie Awards came in the wake of the #OscarsSoWhite campaign which saw many inside and outside of the industry commenting on the stark lack of diversity with this year’s Academy Awards nominees.
Other winners on the night included Sanaa Lathan winning Best Actress for her role in The Perfect Guy and Will Smith picking up the Lifetime Achievement award. There was also a couple of tongue-in-cheek awards with Christoph Waltz winning the Best Helpful White Person award and Denzel Washington winning Best Bad Muh Fu**a award.
